Senator Magnus Ngei Abe, Senator representing Rivers South East Senatorial District, has expressed joy on the outcome of the Court of Appeal judgment on the December 10, 2016, Senatorial re-run election, describing it as the most contentious election in the history of elections in Nigeria. Speaking to newsmen shortly after the Appeal Court confirmed him as the winner of the election, Abe said although Hon. Olaka Nwogu challenged his victory, he deserves commendation for exhausting his constitutional rights up to the level of the Court of Appeal and hoped that the decision of the Court would put to rest his contention after almost two years of electoral battle.

Speaking in an interview with NTA International, Senator Abe said that there is a growing level of support from the Niger Delta to the present administration. This, he said is as a result of engagement by this administration with the people of the region.

Senator Abe said the Ogoni made him proud by their unflinching support and vote cast for him on the December 10 re-run election. He stated that by their votes they had made a statement and drawn the respect of the entire Rivers people on their principled stand to go to the centre.

Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, says he is undaunted despite attempt to use federal might to upturn the wishes of the people during rerun elections, and will at all times defend Rivers people and democracy at all costs.  He made the declaration when he played host to the Management and Board of Authority Newspapers Limited, during official handover of nomination letter as “Governor of the Year” by the newspaper at Government House in Port Harcourt, yesterday.  Wike said he will always accord respect to the office of the President even in the face of confrontation from those he believed are working against the Federal Government in the name of the ruling All Progressives Congress(APC) in Rivers State.  The Rivers State Chief Executive said, “ what we are saying is that democracy must triumph in this country.”

Wike Leads People’s Protest (The Tide)

The Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, yesterday, led thousands of Rivers people to the streets to protest the alleged killings by the police and other security agencies during the December 10 rerun elections.  The governor and other protesters had taken off from the Government House, Port Harcourt at 8am, and marched through Azikiwe Street and Bank Road before stopping at the Rivers State Police headquarters on Moscow Road.  Wike had waited patiently for about 30 minutes before the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Cyril Okoro, came out and spoke through the gate.  The governor, who later addressed the police, explained that the people of Rivers State were at the Police headquarters to inform the authorities that they were tired of the killings of innocent people in the state by the police and other security operatives.

Ahead of Saturday’s re-run election in Rivers State, pro-democracy and good governance group, the Wailing Wailers, have urged chieftains of the All Progressives Congress, particularly the National Chairman, Chief Odigie Oyegun and Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State to stop making inciting statements capable of sparking violence in the state. The group, said the call became necessary, following what it described as inciting statements made by Oyegun and Ganduje, at the Mega Rally of the APC in Port-Harcourt, the Rivers capital.

The Rivers State Government has expressed fears over the possible assassination of Chief Nyesom Ezebunwo Wike before the December 10 rerun elections in Rivers State. The State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Dr. Austin Tam-George, who raised the alarm said the safety of the Chief Executive of Rivers State cannot be guaranteed following the criminal withdrawal of his Chief Security Officer days before the rerun elections in Rivers State. Dr. Tam-George described the withdrawal as criminal, vexatious and undemocratic especially now that all security breaches in the state will be blamed on the State Chief Executive. Meanwhile, the Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike has revealed that in continuation of the Police High Command’s plot to assassinate him; his Chief Security Officer (CSO) has been withdrawn. The governor said the CSO was withdrawn on Monday alongside several other policemen from Government House, Port Harcourt.
